Now I’m the mother of two teenagers…

Thirteen years ago, our second son was born.  Brendon’s entrance into this world was quick and fairly easy, once real labor ensued.  I was pleased at this occurrence… and then he began two hours of squalling.  The first hour was triggered by general indignation at his new environment.  The second hour seemed to be a reaction to the lights, once he finally opened his eyes.

Thus, I unknowingly had a portent of the first several years of his life.  All during that time, I was attempting to deal with sleep deprivation, postpartum depression, pregnancy, two moves, and more postpartum depression.  Brendon was having tummy troubles and sleep quirks, while being chronically cranky the first few months… then later we dealt with some health problems for both of us, as well as resulting issues.  It didn’t help my attitude that he liked his Daddy more than he liked me, although it makes sense to me now that Kevin was a welcome relief to both me and Brendon when he came home from work.

Over time, we learned to understand Brendon’s needs and sensitivities and see unique traits that his Creator instilled in his personality.  After that rough start it became apparent that though raising this determined little person wouldn’t always be easy, it would always be interesting.  Kevin used to say of him, “He takes notions.”  But I must say, that no matter what else was happening, I couldn’t have put in a custom order for a sweeter boy with a gentler spirit.

Now I can look back and see lessons I needed to learn about letting the Holy Spirit parent through me, rather than sticking to what I “knew” I should be doing.  I remember moments of clarity, realizing God’s feelings for me, as I simultaneously experienced exasperation and the most overwhelming love and protective instinct I’ve ever felt for another human.  I realized that there is grace enough to cover my shortcomings, and that I really don’t want to be my idea of a “perfect parent.”  I want to be the parent God wants me to be for each child in every specific area; and if that means apologizing to a child and praying together, it can be one of the best moments of your relationship.  If that means following an urge and going against convention to do what is best for your child, then watching God’s plan unfold will be worth any frustration involved and His strength will be made perfect in moments of human weakness.

It seems that the “hard” part of Brendon’s childhood has been over for some time.  Though I could say many things about him, of prime significance are his resourcefulness, creativity and dependability.  He is an observant, responsible young man with a sharp sense of humor.  His conscience seems to function pretty well.  I see maturity and spiritual growth in his life.  He’s an excellent helper in Children’s Church, and I regularly get good reports on him from adults in several other areas at church, from other parents when he’s visiting them, etc.  And one of my favorite things — he’s a great companion.

Having said all that, words fail me when I try to say how much I love him.

Some smiles I’ll share

A few weeks ago I received this letter; the end result of which, is that Kisa has two dog boys coming to visit her soon.  She would be ecstatic if she understood what we’ve been telling her about it, as she LOVES them.

Dear Aunt Tammi and Uncle Kevin,

Our Mommy and Daddy are going out of town _______ and they are not taking us with them. They said something about it being their 10th wedding anniversary blah, blah, blah… so we wanted to know if we could come stay at your house with Kisa for the weekend? We know Uncle Kevin will love all over us and let us sit on his lap all of the time so we figure your house is a good place to be. Even though Kisa scares us sometimes we know we would become happy cousins soon and Uncle Kevin will keep us safe. (Can you believe they found a place for Ashlynne and Jenna to go but not us – the outrage of it all!!)

Please let us know – we think it is simply horrible that Mommy and Daddy are leaving us behind.

Sincerely, Bentley and Charlie Culpepper

Having slept most of the afternoon, Brendon was bored late Sunday night.  He took a series of “bored” pictures and made a photo album on Facebook.  Celeste wrote the following review and sent him some fan mail.

‘Just want to say I’m a big fan of the “Bored” series of photographs by up-and-comer Brendon Mossman.  His work has a style and pathos which is so true to the title.  I am especially moved by “Bored With a Chain.”  I eagerly await his next offering.’

Good news for the week

I now have my own “production” line of jewelry.  This is in addition to other custom orders and jewelry I was already selling online or giving to friends.  I received a $250 order this week with more to follow from a friend’s aunt, and she’s showing my samples and price list to other Mary Kay managers.

Zander has an ever-evolving “underwear song”

After we heard the latest verse, Aislynn told me, “Mom, you gave birth to a healthy and handsome, but VERY disgusting boy.”

Cats

Kevin long ago made a rule that we couldn’t have more pets in the house than people (the turtles and frog don’t technically count, they aren’t all around sharing our living space).

When we moved in April, Kevin’s cat Toffee disappeared from the new neighborhood.  After two weeks it seemed certain that he was gone for good, so Aislynn and I brought home a new kitten for dad.  A week later, Toffee showed up; filthy, skittish, with cuts and bruises.  This brought our feline occupancy up to six.  6 Cats = Too Many Inside (not that I wasn’t in firm agreement with the rule anyway).

Our new baby’s name is Emmitt and the human members of the family are enjoying him more than I recall us all enjoying any other new cat.  Across the board, we drop what we’re doing to play with him, and the sounds of baby-talk are frequently heard.

Me, to Emmitt: “I love you, love you, love you!  You make my heart want to ’splode!”

Brendon: “I’ll go get some towels.”

Happylujah

After today we’re finished at the old house.  The emerging feeling of relief is on a par with the happy ending of a pregnancy — which only someone who has been there miserably can appreciate.  Kevin was working a LOT and stressed, then sick and in bed for three days, then not much energy for a few days, then we were down to this past weekend and running out of time.  I have fought a sinus infection for a week and the depths of despair for longer.  Thank the Lord for a very understanding landlord who gave us an extra day, a providential ending to an interminable month.

The kids had two weeks of Spring Break on purpose for packing and moving and moving and unpacking, then the past week off because of all the problems and priorities, so this afternoon we MUST have school!  We’re already going well into June to meet requirements, and a kid or two are even considering Saturday school so they’ll be out sooner.

And then the next step will be groceries and a renewed focus on nutrition, because from the few available choices the boys and I are eating chicken pot pies for breakfast while Aislynn is having blueberry waffles and Dr. Pepper.

American Idol

This season, I’ve kept quiet, because whether or not Sanjaya is still around isn’t really interesting, funny or edificational.  (I don’t know if that’s really a word.)  Kevin can’t stand him, I feel sorry for him but don’t want to see or hear him anymore, and Z thinks he’s great and wonders what went wrong with our ears.

But last night was amusing, so…  Kevin realized that Sanjaya was coming up last in the show, then an expression of fear-tinged wonder crossed his face.  He said, “I cannot imagine what abomination is about to be visited upon us by Sanjaya trying to sing Latin music.”

And then that darn boy went and sang better than he has since his audition.  Between that and the new stubble, he won’t be going home tonight.

My B. child

Did I suggest that he use a pen and draw a mustachio and goatee on a baby doll during class last night?  Nope.

Did I make the choice for him to lie about it?  You guessed right.

Did I announce vinegar for lying, when we got home?  Yes, but that’s standard practice; though he hasn’t experienced it in awhile, he wasn’t surprised at the news.

Did I decree that he couldn’t play with friends or do anything else at church last night?  No, his Dad did that.

So imagine my surprise at hearing “Mom, you are RUINING  my childhood.”

Now I must go ruin his morning.  It’s time for him to work on grammar and he’s sure there’s no point to it.

Three days with no chocolate

It’s not temptation, not craving, bothering me, but little things; like almost licking the ice cream spoon after I helped Dolly… almost popping a Whopper into my mouth while Z was eating them… smelling chocolate and instinctively turning towards Kevin’s pudding.

So my discoveries for this week are 1. I’m having to be more vigilant about this than I thought I would.  2. The rest of my family eats a lot of chocolate, but I’m supposedly the addict. (And they’re doing it in front of me, which isn’t nice!!)

40 Day Fast

We’re about to start the annual 40 Day Fast at church, and I physically can’t go without food for a great length of time but feel the need to participate this year.

Me: Maybe I should “fast” chocolate.

Kevin: How about coffee?

Me: (frowning) Not if you want me to educate your children, I have to be awake for that… I’m not sure about no chocolate for 40 days, though.

Kevin: If you give up chocolate for 40 days, then that also counts as my fast since I have to live with you.

So I’ll go 20 days, and then pray and decide whether to go another 10 or 20.  In the meantime, please don’t tempt me!

Cricket advertising

I went to buy crickets for my turtles.  Instead of waiting for a salesperson to get some from the bin, I saw a “Bug Box” and just bought them that way.  I didn’t even see the advertising until I got home –

Plump juicy morsels in stay fresh exoskeletons!

The classic cricket experience… crunchy outside, soft and chewy inside.

On the company’s website (www.ebugco.com), they say

The most convenient route to gut-loaded, calcium enriched crickets.

I have to get a t-shirt.

Cobwebs

Intricate projects made from an amazing substance… not always pretty, but neither they nor their creators bother me at all.

Sadly, they aren’t socially acceptable as year-round home decor.  If only I were Lily Munster and didn’t care.

More wildlife in the house, and I’m not talking about neighborhood children

Monday morning we heard chirping and I thought a bird had fallen out of a tree.  Z and A went outside to check while I looked out the window, and it was a baby squirrel crying on the ground.  (When you’re closer, it sounds more like a chirpy “me-eew.”)

We’ve been keeping him warm, and he drinks puppy formula.  Today he’s going to live with a wildlife rehabilitator.

*****************************

B and A were both baptized Sunday.  He changed his mind about the goggles, and she stopped saying “babbitized” — kind of sad.

Bab-bit-ized (Dolly’s pronunciation)

So B was thinking of being baptized on Sunday, and during discussion he asked if he could wear his swim goggles.  Pastor D said “yes”… so we’ll get a picture to properly shock both grandmothers.

Now his sister is thinking she wants to do it also, so daddy gets to have a theological discussion when he gets home tonight.

Childhood memory:  Matt and I would play “baptism” in a plastic wading pool. We’d take turns, and to do it properly the officiating party had to say “Baaaaaab- (putting under) TIZE!! (bringing up).”

Notes from here…

Numero Uno –

Son #2 was looking at a calendar.  “Mom, do we celebrate ‘Children’s Day?’”

Me: “How would we celebrate?  Maybe giving away our children for a day?”

Him: “No!  By having no school.”

Numero Dos –

We’re going on vacation to Myrtle Beach (with a day in Charleston) 4/29 – 5/6, yippee!  Then A and I will head to Texas on 5/12 and come home 5/21.  She’s going to be SUCH a beautiful flower-girl.  Which reminds me — Patrick, do you have a coffee-maker?

Numero Tres —

My boys and two of their friends have been building a fort in a yard down the street.  Next door to that, one boy’s sister and her friend have been building/creating a club.  B came home yesterday and announced that the boys had been helping the girls with their club, and then “we signed a peace treaty.”

I think it would be a great idea if he’d sign such a treaty with his siblings.

:~)

I took a nap this afternoon, then awakened in a parallel universe.

Before I slept, I told some grumbling offspring that if they couldn’t keep themselves quiet and amused, there were plenty of jobs that could be done around the house, and I suggested a few.  This isn’t an unusual monologue, and I expected the usual results — nothing.

I yawned my way downstairs and discovered that Dolly had folded the bath towels, B had moved chairs, etc. out of the kitchen and partially swept, Z had rinsed dishes and loaded the dishwasher AND taken pity (which is unprecedented) on his tired brother and finished the sweeping.  Not only had their father not made them do these things, he had cleared and washed countertops.

I need to stop typing now, and go stare at the kitchen, whose cleaning I didn’t request or direct.  Because, somehow, I’ll probably be back in my own world tomorrow.
