A response to “supporting Healthcare Bill/preventing abortions”

(Note: On one of my huband’s blogs, a man wrote that he was a pro-life Christian.  He supported the healthcare bill because insurance was expensive; thus, a person not having healthcare might choose to have an abortion for $500, rather than having medical bills of thousands.  He ended his comments by saying “are Christians ready to put a price on a life?”)

D — I’m very pro-life. Abortion breaks my heart. I’ve worked in a pregnancy counseling center, and hope to do so again in the future. I’ve worn the tiny unborn feet pin. And I can’t agree with your statements.

The choice to have an abortion ultimately is between a woman and God, whether it stems from a moral choice/consequence or a decision to terminate a handicapped infant because they don’t think they can raise it.  A person facing that decision has options. Organizations offer aid in unwed mother, and other, scenarios; People are wanting to adopt unwanted children, just for two examples. Even if we were talking about one of your own children in such a situation, all your prayers, preventive teaching and offers to help would not necessarily stop them from making a decision with which you don’t agree.

Your reasoning seems very much to me like the decision to hand kids condoms in school because they’re going to have sex anyway, and “we” need to try and prevent STDs and unwanted pregnancies. Whereas, statistics show that teaching abstinence will be the far more effective course, especially in conjunction with parents knowing where their children are/who they’re with, and having boundaries as well as keeping communication lines open (you know, like actually parenting!).

To say that overlooking bigger government making more demands and violating more rights of millions of people — including said government not recognizing the rights of the unborn — is worth the price to save one baby… you do know that the government you’re supporting on the healthcare issue is the same one that legalized abortion, right? Asking WWJD in this situation, I don’t think He’d support that government’s healthcare bill to try and save one life.  He knows those lives are going straight to Heaven; whereas, the ones still living here are going to be praying for His quick return as our freedoms are revoked in the coming Socialist makeover of our country.

Really old coffee advertisement

From the Public Advisor (England, 1657):

“In Bartholomew Lane on the back side of the Old Exchange, the drink called ‘Coffee’ is for sale.  It is a very wholesome and physical drink, having many excellent virtues, closes the orifice of the stomach, fortifies the heat within, helpeth digestion, quickens the spirits, maketh the heart lightsome, is good against eyesores, coughs or colds, rhumes, consumption, headache, dropsy, gout, scurvy, Kings evil, and many others.  Is to be sold both in the morning and at three o’clock in the afternoon.”

If only even half of that were true.

Global Warming Myth — One of my growing pet peeves

It hasn’t been proven, after years of all this talk… just bounced around by the media and self-important celebrities and a few scientists with an agenda.

It was all started by Al Gore; which should’ve made any rational person take pause for thought and their own research.

Global warming is either a problem, or it isn’t.  Just at the basics, if there is a warming trend as we’re being told, that will gather velocity… why the nonconformity of April temperatures being lower than normal, midwestern winters being harsher.

And, now, our climate system isn’t accumulating Joules (some measurement formula of radiative imbalance) as quickly as it should.  In fact, the scientists in this particular venue came up with their formula/theory and made their predictions based on the fact that upper oceans were accumulating heat in the 1990’s.  And now their calculations are off — darned if those oceans haven’t cooled back down now!!!

I’ll make my own prediction — as any supposed “proof” disappears or becomes inconsistent, belief and media attention on global warming will not dissipate.  Instead, mankind will begin congratulating the “believers” on their successful efforts and policies to reverse the harmful trend; paying no attention, meanwhile, to those pointing out meterological data from 50-100 years ago that shows similar scenarios, or whatever you want to call them.

It really doesn’t matter, just coin your own three- or four-syllable term.

Cobwebs

Intricate projects made from an amazing substance… not always pretty, but neither they nor their creators bother me at all.

Sadly, they aren’t socially acceptable as year-round home decor.  If only I were Lily Munster and didn’t care.

NBA Finals

I didn’t watch game one, so maybe I missed something (but I doubt it). I’ve watched it all since (except I couldn’t stay awake for all of game four).   With ABC broadcasting to over 200 countries, it’s a pity the world had to wait until game four to see some interesting ball.

On a slightly related note, I met Del Harris when I was 13 or 14, and that was the biggest thrill of life-to-date.  Not just because I knew he coached pro-ball — his son Alex was one of my favorite players at HSU (my parents’ alma mater, where my dad worked, and I roamed and played racquetball and watched BB practices and games).

On an even more slightly related note, Meadowlark Lemon and the Shooting Stars vs. the Washington Generals: the game was played at the HSU gym one night.  My brother got to be a ball-boy.  My dad couldn’t understand why I’d be jealous about getting to wipe up sweat; and looking back, now I can’t figure it, either.  (Except, maybe, that it was Clown Prince sweat.)

I miss Houston’s Twin Towers, Kevin McHale (he was my favorite player until he retired; I had a ball with his signature imprinted, and my brother called him “Kevin McFail” just to irritate me), Kareem (I named a cat Kareema), Isaiah Thomas, Dr. J., Magic, and the Celtics/Lakers 80’s rivalry.  Well, I miss 80’s NBA altogether, but I DON’T miss Larry Bird.

I’ve just had to tell myself that I’m using typing as an avoidance tactic, so I’m through waxing nostalgic for awhile.   Off to all the things I don’t want to do…

My thoughts on Jill Carroll

As I understand it, her decision to live in that region and cover a particular story was partially based on a belief that she’d be among the “good Muslims” we’ve heard about.  The ones persecuted for the actions of the “extremist Muslims.”  The ones so glad to have a sympathetic American ear that they would treat her as a welcome guest.

Surprise.

Her disillusionment aside — how can she expect her government not only to rescue her from the peril in which she placed herself, but to make it a top priority?  “Please just do whatever they want, give them whatever they want as quickly as possible.”

Jill, did you not grow up knowing that the U.S. doesn’t negotiate with terrorists?  Has that position not been massively reinforced since 9-11?  Admittedly, there have been some concessions made, and some Iraqi captives have been released instead of beheaded.  But what, other than a frantic hope, makes you think your case will be one of the exceptions?

I hope you know Christ as your Savior.   I hope you’re freed and allowed to come home to your family.  I hope that, if you live to old age, you have more common sense in the future.  I hope that you become a red, white or blue thread of character in our national fabric of a united nation, rather than a clashing yellow streak of entitlement.
